2009…60 Wins and a Whole Lot of Highlights
Sixty wins and a whole lot of highlights mark the 2009 edition of Tiger softball. As the season came to an end, history will show that Chattanooga State continues to set the standard of excellence in softball and in the classroom.
In the midst of a 35 game winning streak, a squad of 19 helped Coach Randolph achieve her 400th coaching win at Chattanooga State putting her in the upper echelon of coaches in the country. The 5-4 win vs. Florence Darlington came prior to the FCCJ tournament that saw Tiger softball win all four games of the tournament, winning the championship game by coming from behind to beat Saint Petersburg Community College 4-3.
On April 15, history was made as Chattanooga State reached the #1 ranking nationally. When it was all said and done the Tigers finished ranked fourth in the country continuing their impressive national showing.
Sophomore leadership played a vital role in on the field success and off field unity that made the 2009 team special. Britni Pearce stole an astounding 61 bases in 61 attempts and had a whopping 110 hits. Meagan Qualls was the consummate #3 hitter, knocking 12 over the fence and leading the team with a .483 on base percentage. With her tenacious aggressive play, Amber Janus once again showed why she will long be remembered as one of the best shortstops to ever play at Chattanooga State. Brianna Payne came out of no where to own the centerfield position and batted an effective .364.
Coach Randolph preached that for Tiger success it would take a pitching staff, not just one person. Haley Workman was 30-3 with a .82 ERA and struck out 323 in 205 innings. Kendall Bruning won 17 games with a 67 mph fastball and batted .379 with 11 homeruns and 54 RBI’s. Sophomore Jessica Duncan went a perfect 13-0 and batted .456 on 68 at bats. The Tiger pitching staff had a 1.02 ERA while batters hit a miserly .157.
The freshmen were asked to develop quickly and develop they did. At first base Whitney Galloway played stellar defense and led the team with 67 RBI’s, while hitting 11 homeruns and batting a robust .408. Leah Kelley owned second base and excelled at the bat, banging out 9 homeruns on a .389 batting average. Catching day in and day out, Ashley Bryson hit a remarkable .413 with 10 homeruns and 53 RBI’s.
Prior to a broken finger Tabitha McNew set the table from the lead off position and finished with an on base percentage of .371 and 28 stolen bases. Ashleigh George came off the bench with some key homeruns and RBI’s vs. many of the Florida schools while Lauren Stoker and Kristina Proctor played key roles all year long in the pinch running department. Chelsea Simon battled injuries in the fall but was able to rebound in the spring to exhibit her strong arm in the outfield. Kaela Jackson and Shana Westover brought their run through the wall mentality day in and day out getting key hits at just the right time.
The Region Tournament saw the Tigers come home with a 5-2 record with Haley Workman, Britni Pearce and Meagan Qualls earning All Tournament team honors. Wins vs. Cleveland State (8-0), Jackson State (7-1), Columbia State (3-0), Volunteer State (10-1) and Motlow State (3-0) highlighted the rain filled weekend. As the runner up in the tournament the returning Tigers and their new teammates will look to the 2009-2010 season with renewed vigor, enthusiasm and sense of direction.

In the fifth, Tabitha McNew led off with a single and was promptly sent to third on a Britni Pearce single.
